Help Spread My Good Blog

I recently joined Gadgets Magazine’s Good Blog Awards. The theme Spark and Share struck me. The tagline in their website says “The greatest achievements come from humble beginnings – a single thought. We’re searching for blog entries that can inspire others to do something good and be something better. Show us how ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
I always believed that I have a lot to say just like thousands of others. So naturally, I joined. Being a working mom, the cause that is closest to my heart is quality time with the family, so I wrote about that one.
There are a lot of good entries with good causes to boot mind you. I doubt if I will ever make it to top ten. I have a few bets of my own from the list of entries. I wouldn’t mind getting some votes though and a couple of shares. I figured if all of us, parents, would just make an effort to spend quality dinner time with our family, with our kids, there would be less troublesome kids out there, less dropouts, less youth gangs, less teenage mommies and daddies, less broken kids. If I can spread this idea like wildfire maybe I would be doing the world a whole lot of good.
So, I hope you can help me, more than winning, I would really like to bring my message across. Here’s the link to my write-up: GOOD BLOG ENTRY. As a “thank you” to those good souls who will rate and share my good blog, I will be raffling off a leather passport holder from Sledgers. Who knows, if there would be lots of generous ones (paging sponsors! haha) out there, maybe I can add some more.:)

Orthopedic Specialist and Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist

Most of the readers of my blogpost, Dealing With Dextroscoliosis, would often ask me where to go to have their scoliosis checked or how to go about having it checked.  The first step in dealing with your scoliosis is to see a Rehabilitation Specialist or Physiatrist. In most cases, people with dextroscoliosis tend to consult an orthopedic doctor first. To a certain extent, orthopedic doctors can diagnose scoliosistic condition and give possible treatment but for a more comprehensive physical management of scoliosistic illness or any other physical injuries in that matter, Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist or Physiatrist is your best bet. So what is the difference between an Orthopedic Specialist and Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist? The difference lies in their nature of practice.

Orthopedic Specialist

An Orthopedic Specialist is a medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of the musculoskeletal system which includes the bones, joints, muscles, and any related painful conditions. If, for example, you seek advice and treatment from an orthopedic specialist regarding your scoliosis, he will recommend you to undergo a scoliosistic sequence xray or a spine xray. Based on the results and findings, he will be able to tell you the degree of your curvature as well as the kind of scoliosis that you have. But then, for proper management of your condition, he will refer you to a Rehab Medicine specialist or Physiatrist since it is not like a broken leg or foot that needs casting or surgery.

Rehabilitation Specialist or Physiatrist

A Rehabilitation Specialist or Physiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the non-surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system. They usually work with a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, and therapeutic recreation specialists in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program. Combined with the use of medications, physical modalities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement & activities modification, adaptive equipment and assistive device, orthotics (braces), prosthesis, and experiential training approaches, they work to restore optimal functioning of the affected part of the body. If you are a patient with scoliosistic condition you can go straight to a Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist to save time and cut costs since the Rehab Specialist will handle the long term management of your condition. But in cases where surgery is required, the Rehab Specialist will refer you back to an Orthopedic doctor.

Rehabilitation Specialists in the Philippines

Most of the major hospitals here in the Philippines such as University of Santo Tomas, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Asian Hospital, University of Perpetual Help to name a few, as well as health clinics in malls such as Healthway and Tokyo Healthlink, have resident Rehabilitation Medicine Specialists in their Bone Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Department, who can work well with you in managing your scoliosis.

In the Face of a Tragedy

When most of us were sleeping soundlessly in our comfortable beds, probably exhausted from last minute Christmas shopping and endless Christmas parties last Friday night, residents from Cagayan De Oro Philippines and nearby provinces were fighting for their lives. They were abruptly roused from their sleep by rampaging floodwater coming from the mountains brought about by typhoon Sendong.

In less than an hour, floodwater rose to 11 feet. The residents were caught off guard, most of them didn’t even have the chance to flee for safety. It was Ondoy again but then in another setting, Mindanao.

At least 216 were confirmed dead in Cagayan De Oro alone, hundred others are still unaccounted for.

God is truly wise for He allowed this tragedy to happen during the advent season when there’s so much outpouring of love from all us. If you can donate big sacks of rice, baskets of groceries or envelopes of money to Christmas raffles of different companies, or give your loved ones expensive gifts this Christmas, then donating such things and such amount of money to the victims of this tragedy won’t be a big burden on your part. They say Christmas is the perfect time to practice the virtue of generosity. I say at this time, let us be more generous to the persons who need them the most. In the face of a tragedy, God presents itself through you. Let us make them feel God’s love, that’s what they need to make it through Christmas.
If you wish to donate to those affected and victims of typhoon Sendong, you can course it through the Red Cross, CLICK HERE: PHILIPPINE RED CROSS

Paperpod Seedpaper

I received an interesting christmas gift this morning from my office seatmate, Carmela (yes, the bagoong rice chef). It’s a Paperpod Seedpaper.

Paperpod Seedpaper w/ a pot

I’ll tell you why it’s interesting, it comes with a Notepot that says:
We told you the paper can be used for writing stuff.
1. Take a sheet from a pot. Write.
2. When the notes have lost their relevance, moisten the sheets and place them inside the plastic bag.
3. Seal the bag to keep it humid inside.
4. Watch and wait as your scribbles fade and the seed sprouts appear. Takes 3-14 days.
5. Replant the sprouts in soil.
6. Care for your plants and enjoy.
So environmentally friendly and unique don’t you think? This one tops my list of most interesting christmas gift received this week.:)

4. Let it simmer.

Of Red Shoes and Solemate

For many weeks now, I’ve been on a hunt for the perfect red shoes. I figured with christmas coming and all, finding the perfect pair will be a breeze . But then I realized, after a few trips to different shoe stores, that it is kinda hard finding the perfect pair that will not only fit you beautifully but will fit your budget as well.
I spotted a couple of red shoes while doing the rounds of my favorite malls (Robinsons, ATC and Filinvest). But, they are either too red or too pale. Some doesn’t compliment my feet well or extremely nice but extremely expensive too. My last shot was SM Southmall and true enough, I found my perfect red shoes there.

Oooops, this red shoes is fab but this is not "the one."

I got myself a red ballerina-style flat shoes from Solemate, a brand exclusively made for SM department store. They have a wide selection of flats in different styles and colors. They are super affordable too as they sell for only 299.75 a pair.
'the one"

Solemate reminds me of my favorite shoe shop in Singapore, Rubi, which has the cutest flats. They both offer flats in pretty styles and colors.

Aside from red, I like the flats in gray shade and flower printed design. Solemate shoes are made of canvass though just like some of Rubi shoes, so they are exclusively for sunny days use only. One thing I love about Solemate’s flats is how super comfortable they are on the feet, you won’t have to worry about getting blisters when you wear them for the first time.
flower prints and bright colors

Upon close inspection, stitching and soles are done smoothly, so no need to worry about ribbon getting off or soles getting left behind as you walk, after a couple of use.

For 300 pesos you can get yourself a solemate from SM! I got mine in red, just in time for christmas.:)

Happiness This Christmas Is…

This video tugged at my heart strings because I have an OFW sister. And due to the demands of her work, she cannot come home this christmas. Just like probably millions of OFWs in different places all over the world.
Happiness for them every christmas is coming home again. And for us loved ones here waiting for them, happiness for us is having them home every christmas.

The Five Love Languages

Most of the time, the root cause of most conflicts in a family, may it be spousal relationship or parent-child relationship is simply not knowing each other’s love language. According to Dr. Gary Chapman, a leading marriage counselor in the US, everyone has a primary way of expressing and interpreting love. We express love and receive love in different ways. According to him, there are five universal love languages that we all identify with. These are Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch.
If this is your love language, unsolicited compliments mean the world to you. Hearing the words, “I love you,” is more important for you than loving gestures. And hearing the reasons behind that love will all the more make your spirit soar. And just as powerful loving words are to you, insults and unkind words will leave you shattered.
In the vernacular of Quality Time, nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention. If this is your love language, the physical presence of your significant other more than his promising words will make you feel truly special and loved. For you, it is critical that you feel your loved one being right then and there with you—with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby. Distractions, postponed dates, or the failure to listen are big issues you usually struggle with. Since you show love in this way too, your loved ones can always count on you to be the first one to be there for them anytime.
If this is your love language, receiving gifts or simple little stuffs from your loved one makes you feel over the moon. You thrive on the love, thoughtfulness, and effort behind the gift. This is not in any way makes you a materialistic person though, if you speak this language, this only means that the perfect gift or gesture speaks volumes more than words or action. And since you speak this language too, you show your love by showering your loved ones with simple notes, little gifts and well-thought out surprise. A missed birthday, anniversary, or a hasty, thoughtless gift would spell disaster for you—so would the absence of everyday gestures.
If this is your love language, simple acts of service as well as the words “Let me do that for you” are surefire ways to melt and tickle your heart. Likewise, you show your love through simple acts of service, such as cooking for them, arranging their stuffs or driving them around. Laziness and broken commitments will leave you feeling hurt or taken for granted.
If this is the love language you speak, simple physical touch such as hugs, pats on the back, holding hands, and thoughtful touches on the arm, shoulder, or face mean the world to you. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial points for you while neglect or abuse is simply unforgivable and unacceptable.
Whereas knowing the love language of your wife, husband and kids will save you the trouble of having to go through endless drama everyday, the same holds true with your relationships outside the home. Knowing the love language of your boss, subordinates, and friends will help improve your professional and personal dealings with them. Being sensitive to the way they receive and show love will save you the trouble of having to explain yourself lest they feel that their feelings were trampled, neglected or set aside.
Being aware of how a person receive love and show love will lead to better communication and understanding which are essential in maintaining good relationships. To find out your primary love language, take this quiz:LOVE LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT. Encourage your husband, wife, kids and friends to take the quiz too.:)
